Light and crispy tempura battered chicken tossed in a simple sweetened homey sauce. This Chinese Honey Chicken is incredibly easy to make using just a couple of simple ingredients.

With this easy recipe, you can skip the takeout and make this at home. It’s an expensive version that yields the same if not better results! For a filling meal, serve this with fried rice and garnish with some green onions, red pepper flakes, chives, or sesame seeds.

The incredible thing about this exceptionally crispy honey chicken is how simple it is to prepare (and it is naturally gluten-free!). Chinese restaurants are deceiving us by portraying this meal as daunting since it tastes so light, crispy, and sweet, and we are unable to identify the ingredients. However, with just 6 ingredients, you’ll swear it tastes just as amazing as P.F. Chang’s!

So what is the secret to crispy honey chicken? It’s no surprise that the minimal ingredients in the breading let the creamy honey sauce be the star! While the egg whites, add a light taste, it’s the cornstarch that keeps these chickens super crispy.

Ingredients

4 large egg whites

vegetable oil, for frying

1 lb chicken breast, cut into 1-inch thin chunks

1/4 c. honey

1/2 c. mayonnaise

2 tbsp sweetened condensed milk

3/4 c. cornstarch (or Mochiko Sweet Rice Flour)

1/3 c. water

How to make Chinese Honey Chicken

Step 1: Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl for about 1 to 2 minutes until foamy. Then, stir in the cornstarch and water until well blended. Next, fold in the chicken.

Step 2: In a large pot, heat three inches of oil to 350 degrees over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken pieces in batches and fry for about 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 3: Place the mayonnaise, honey, and sweetened condensed milk in a large bowl. Mix well until combined. Just before serving, toss the fried chicken into the mixture.
