This is an iconic dish with a mixture of thinly sliced ribeye, caramelized onions, and tons of melted cheese. These Homemade Philly Cheesesteaks are seriously addicting! This version is my favorite for good reasons. Plus, you can easily adjust it to suit your taste.
For best results, choose a type of steak that is well-marbled and can easily be sliced thinly. This guarantee nice and juicy meat. We used sirloin as an inexpensive option. But if preferred, you can use the traditional ribeye. As for the cheese, I love Provolone. Make sure to use relatively mild flavor cheese that melts well. For the buns, you can use hoagie rolls, sub-buns, and Italian hero rolls. I suggest picking buns that are soft and have a hinge. This ensures that the cheese steak and veggies will not fall off.
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds sirloin steak, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2 green peppers, thinly sliced
1 large yellow onion, sliced
2 red peppers, thinly sliced
8 slices provolone
4 hoagie rolls
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
How to make Homemade Philly Cheesesteaks
Step 1: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the peppers and onion to the skillet and sprinkle with salt. Saute for about 12 to 15 minutes until caramelized. Set aside when done.
Step 2: To the now-empty skillet, add the rest of the oil. Place the steak and cook for about 5 minutes until it has reached your desired doneness. To taste, season with salt and pepper.
Step 3: To the skillet, add the veggies back. Toss well. On top, add the provolone. Put the lid on and continue to cook for additional 3 minutes until the cheese has melted.
Step 4: Among the hoagie rolls, divide the mixture. Serve and enjoy!
